In perhaps the largest hack in Twitter’s history, multiple profiles belonging to some of the most prolific political and business figures in the world have just been hacked by a group apparently running a Bitcoin scam.

The scam was pretending to be an offer to send back $2,000 worth of Bitcoin for every $1,000 submitted to a link attached in multiple tweets posted by the accounts and pinned to their profiles. Among those hacked were former president Barack Obama, former vice president Joe Biden, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, musician Kanye West, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and failed presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg.

The scam has already yielded Bitcoin well over $100,000 by 6:30 PM EST, and the value of Twitter stocks dropped by 3%. Immediately following the hack, every single Twitter account with a blue “verified” checkmark was prohibited from tweeting in any way as a security measure while Twitter attempted to deal with the breach.
